Mallow the Rabbit/ Mallow the Creepy Rabbit

This pattern has a slightly different approach to amigurumi than I think most of us are used to. So even though I’ve been crocheting for nearly 30 years, I was humbled in my first attempt at constructing sweet Mallow the Rabbit. I got a little bit cocky and thought, “stitch markers? Who needs stitches markers if you know how to read rows?” Well turns out I needed stitch markers… Attempt 1 also reminded me that a test piece can be really important and to save the ‘good yarn’ for when you know what you’re doing.

The first version of Mallow the Creepy Rabbit is the black Mallow. This bug-eyed guy reminded me of a Tim Burton creation, so I decided to embrace this monstrosity and add stitches to him. He’s in my shops if anyone is interested in this Misfit Toy.

The Blue Mallow is my second attempt. With a little experience with the pattern, renewed humility, and stitch markers I created a sweeter version. This Mallow was requested as a birthday present for a little boy. “Make it big!” he told me.

Squish Cows

The Squish cow maybe cute, but the way they eat really isn’t:

You might have heard that cows have 4 stomachs, but do you know what they do with them? Initially, cows barely chew their food when grazing and that rough vegetation is stored in one of the first two stomachs: the rumen and the reticulum. Once the cow is done grazing they cough up that stored, mostly unprocessed food (now called chud). They chew the chud completely and swallow it for a second time (eww). The second-swallowed food now goes to the third and fourth stomachs: the omasum and abomasum. It is finally in these 3rd and 4th stomachs that the food is digested and they extract out the nutrients they need to survive.

A cow can typically live for 15-20 years, and an average cow weighs around 1200 lbs. Cows are visually dominant animals and have better hearing than horses. Vocalization is an extremely important mode of communication between herd members and calves learn to recognize their mothers from their calls. Cows only sleep about 4 hours a day, but must lay down to sleep deeply.

Cows are originally domesticated separately in the middle east and in India. The term ‘cattle’ was originally derived from Latin and meant “moveable personal property.” The cow is highly revered in Hinduism. The cow is thought to Symbolize Mother Earth and the milk as the nourishment for all creations.

Also, Mini Cows are a reality and OMG. They have been bred since 3000 BC but only made it to America as late as 1893.

Beware the Mini Krakens!!!

Hundreds of years ago Norse sailors were terrified of the legend of the ‘Kraken’- a giant sea monster that would attack and destroy ships.

The legendary ‘Kraken’ is thought to be based on sightings of Giant Squids (Architeuthis dux). Giant Squids can grow up to 12-13 meters, but there have been undocumented claims of some individuals growing up to 20 meters! That’s 66ft for my American friends!

Giant Squids are deep ocean dwellers and can be found in all of the World’s oceans. It is not fully known at what depths they spend most of their time, but extrapolating from trawler ships and Sperm Whale diving (their natural predator) suggests they live at depths of 300-1000 meters. Giant Squids have one of the largest eyes of all species on Earth reaching at least 11 inches in diameter. They need these incredibly large eyes to detect the bioluminescence of their prey in the dark depths.

Giant Squids are Cephalopods, a type of mollusk, which means their feet (‘pod’) are connected to their head (‘Cephalo-’). Cephalopods have long been used in neuroscience research as they have one of the most complex nervous systems of all mollusks. In the 1930’s, the famous Neuroscientists Hodgkin and Huxley used Giant Squid nerves to first show that neurons communicate to different parts of the body using Electrical Signals- i.e. nerve impulses.

While the little beasts I have created will hardly sink your ship, I do hope they bring a smile to your face and help you remember the legend of the ‘Kraken.’

Scrunchies!

Scrunchies are back! Wear them in your hair; wear them on your wrists.

My Scrunchies feature a crocheted cotton exterior, and a tough, durable hair tie (I spent sooo much time sourcing my very favorite hair ties for these so they last!).

These Scrunchies are my first experiments with designing my own scrunchie pattern.

I originally got the idea from Hobbii’s free scrunchie pattern which is free to download here:

https://hobbii.com/everyday-glitter-scrunchie

However, I found their pattern cumbersome, so I started my own. It’s close to finished but the release date is TBD since I’m launching so many patterns this year. Until it's out, feel free to purchase one of my test pieces.

Seahorse Amigurumi

Sea Horses are technically fish and use an air bladder in their bodies to stay buoyant. They eat little crustaceans and invertebrates. They do not have teeth and will suck in their prey through their tubular snout. Sea horses have 3 hearts! 1 heart moves blood through their systemic body while the other two hearts pump blood through their gills. Seahorses have excellent eyesight and can move their eyes independently of each other.

Sea Horses are serial monogamists and stick with one partner for long periods of time. Sea Horses have an elaborate and interesting reproductive strategy. Each day, partner sea horses will greet each other and perform elaborate dances that can last for hours and are thought to strengthen their bonds. When it comes to child bearing, Seahorses and their cousins, pipefish and sea dragons, are unique in that males carry the eggs internally during gestation and ‘give birth’ to live baby sea horses.

Baby/Juvenile sea horse are called ‘frys’ and its estimated that only 0.5% of individuals survive to adulthood. Thus, frys can be born with up to 1000 siblings. It is not known how long sea horses survive in the wild, but individuals like between 1 and 5 years depending on species.

Seastar Amigurumi

Starfish are echinoderms. They have radial symmetry versus bilateral symmetry (like us). They can regenerate their limbs and can live up to 35 years! They are carnivorous and prey off of mollusks like muscles, clams, oysters. They use the suction cups on the bottom of their legs to pry the shells open.  Sea Stars are found in every ocean including Arctic waters. They cannot, however, survive in freshwater, so you won’t be seeing them in any lakes.

Starfish do not have muscles. Instead they use a hydraulic like system to pump water through special canals in order to move different parts of their bodies. They also do not have eyes that create images. Instead they have an ‘eye spot’ at the end of each of their legs. These eye spot allow the starfish to detect dark and light, but again, cannot be used to scan for visual details about their environment.

In 2013, there was a breakout of what has been called “sea star wasting syndrome” off the Pacific Coast of North America. Individuals affected by this condition would refuse food, appear listless, their legs would twist/stretch off, and they would eventually die. There has been signs of recovery of Pacific coast populations, but numbers are still lower than pre-plague populations.

Peacock Amigurumi

There are actually several species of peafowl with the most iconic being the Indian peacock (Pavo cristatus). This species shows a high degree of sexual dimorphism (Differences between males and females) with the most fit males having long, glorious trains of tail feathers and beautiful iridescent coloring. The females are dull gray, brown, and green. However, there is evidence that older peahens can start to develop iridescence/ male plumage once their levels of estrogen decrease either from old age or damaged ovaries. This would indicate that estrogen levels actually suppress the beautiful coloring we associate with these animals.

In this species, females choose their mating partners and the train of male feathers is hypothesized to signal his fitness to those females.

Albinism and Leucism occur in these birds causing a ‘white peacock’ as well as numerous recognized subspecies with different colorations.

Peacocks were not native to North American, but do well in warmer climates and can now be found in cities such as Houston, Miami, and Honolulu.

Peacocks are able to fly but spend most of their time on the ground. They typically only fly to escape predators.

It is legal to have peacocks in all 50 states, but they are not recommended as pets due to their need for open space. They are also very social animals and do not do well as a single pet.

Beluga Whale Amigurumi

Belugas live in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic Oceans. They are the only whales to typically occur white in color. Belugas lack a dorsal fin which allows them to swim under ice more easily and  have a high proportion of blubber to keep warm. Orcas and Polar Bears are considered natural predators of Belugas as Belugas are a smaller species of whale.

Traditionally, native peoples of Russia and North America hunted Belugas and these whales are still not protected under the International Whaling Commission. Numbers of Belugas have dropped dramatically in Russia and Greenland, but less so in Canadian and Alaskan Waters. They are listed as ‘near threatened’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red list and some subspecies are considered ‘critically endangered’.

Belugas are considered to be highly charismatic and docile in nature, making them one of the most common cetaceans kept in captivity. Studies on captive Belugas indicate that they frequently seek out physical contact. I would like to interpret that as ‘they like to cuddle’.

Vanilla Bean The Bunny

Beans is a Free Roaming House Rabbit which means she gets to run around the house and never is locked in a cage. She is litter trained and is VERY good at using her litter box.

Beans is a mixed breed bunny: She is half Lion’s Head and half Satin rabbit. Satin rabbits are large breed rabbits and considered ‘meat rabbits’ while Lion’s Head are small-medium rabbits that are extra fluffy.

She has Helicopter Ears which means one ear typically points up, while the other ear is mostly down or ‘lopped’.

Rabbits ARE NOT Rodents. They are Lagomorphs. Rabbits are corpuscular which means they are more active in the dawn and dust portions of the day rather than being fully nocturnal or diurnal.

When Beans was less than a year old, she had a tough time recovering from a spay surgery. After several complications, she also developed GI stasis and almost  died. I was able to slowly nurse her back to health and we have a very deep bond.

Icee Unicorns

Unicorns symbolize purity, innocence, and power. Unicorns are the herald Symbol of Scotland.

Unicorns have been depicted and described in various ancient cultures with some of the oldest depictions coming from Persia (Iran) and Ancient Greece. During the Renaissance Period, Narwhal horns were sometimes sold as Unicorn horns.

In Harry Potter their Hair and Horns are used in potions, but their blood would curse anyone who drank it. Their hair could be used as the core of a wizard’s or witch’s wand.

Unicorns are also found in Equestria (My Little Pony: ex. Twilight Sparkle and Rarity) and possess the ability to teleport.

A few shout outs to Charlie the Unicorn(2005), Rainbow Unicorn Attack (2009), Pokemon #78: Rapidash, and The Last Unicorn (1982).

Turrid Shells Amigurumi Lot 1

Turridae is a large super family of gastropods with spiraling shells. Terebridae and Turritellidae are two genera of predatory marine gastropods with shells resembling “boring drill bits/screws” or “towers.” Turrid snails form their shells out of calcium carbonate and cannot survive in habitats that are too acidic- The acid will dissolve the calcium carbonate! These molluscs are also not common in the deep sea for similar reasons: Calcium carbonate dissolves more easily under high pressures and uniquely, at low temperatures.

As mentioned, these gastropods are predatory. Mainly species have a poison gland and there have even been recorded human deaths associated with interactions with Turrids. Despite these deaths, Turrids are not interested in consuming human flesh. Many are VERY picky eaters and each species will feed on limited types of prey (typically polychaete worms) if not only a single prey source.

Spiral shells have been symbolically linked to life, birth, and fertility due to their association with the sea.

Sparkling Elephant Amigurumi

Did you know elephants have some of the most elaborate and deep family connections? Elephants will mourn their dead relatives. They can live to be around 60-70 years old.

The wrinkles in elephant skin can help them retain up to 10x more water than flat skin and take regular ‘dust baths’ to protect themselves from the sun.

Elephants seem to rely more on their sense of sound and smell compared to their vision and can communicate through seismic signals sent through the ground.

Rainbow Triceratops Amigurumi

Did you know that Triceratops is Latin for ‘Three-horned face’? These animals roamed the earth during the Cretaceous Period which was 145.5 million to 65.5 million years ago.

They were estimated to be about 30 feet long and weigh around 12,000-16,000 pounds.

Besides the 3 horns, Triceratops is known for the frill at the back of its head. No one knows exactly what the frill was for, but theories include protection from predators, attracting mates, recognizing each other, and more.

We also don’t know what color Triceratops were, so I chose to make this one rainbow!!!

Mint ‘n Choco Narwhal Amigurumi

Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are a unique species of toothed whale that live in Arctic waters and grow a characteristic tusk. This tusk has given the Narwhal the moniker “unicorn of the sea.”

Narwhals’ tusks are one of two teeth (usually the left) and can grow up to 10 feet long. The tusks have enhanced sensory capabilities as they contain over 10 million nerve ends(1). The tusk is porous to sea water and allowing them to detect changes in temperature and salinity. The tusks are made of ivory like elephant tusks, and female narwhals typically do not develop tusks. Narwhals can dive down to about 1 mile beneath the icy waters it calls home.

Narwhals feed on fish and shrimp, but are vulnerable to Orca and polar bear attacks.

The word “Narwhal” is derived from the Norse “Nar” meaning “corpse” which was given in references to its grayish molted coloring. It’s Scientific name, Monodon monoceros, means “one tooth, one horn” (2).

One more fun fact: There is a pod of Belugas that have been documented traveling with a lone Narwhal.

Turtle with Removable Shell

Turtles are reptiles and are grouped under the clade name: Testudinata. Organisms within Testudinata are defined as tetrapods with a true turtle shell. Turtles can be divided into a few major categories: tortoises, terrestrial turtles (including box turtles), small aquatic turtles, and sea turtles.

The turtle shell is not removable but actually part of their modified parts of their skeleton including the pelvis and ribs. The outside is covered in scutes made of keratin. Turtles can retract their head and arms into the shell when scared. Adult turtles have a hinge to completely close the shell, but it takes time to develop so juvenile turtles cannot completely close themselves in their shell.

Turtle shells are susceptible to ‘shell rot’ which leads to ulceration of the shell due to fungi or bacteria entering through an abrasion. Turtles who are not properly cared for can develop a condition called ‘pyramiding’ where the scutes grow unevenly leading to a pyramid shape at each scute.

Box turtles have permanent home ranges which start small when they are juveniles and slowly increase. These turtles will attempt to return to their original territory if they are removed.
